In the interest of a long-lived and better organized Carrboro Poetry Festival, Festival founder and director Patrick Herron has decided to cancel the 2006 festival. Patrick hopes the year off will help him to establish the Festival's organizational and financial independence, with the ultimate goal of ensuring a long and healthy life for the Festival. A plan to instutute the Carrboro Poetry Festival under the auspices of a 501c3 is under way. The Festival will be back on track for June 2007.
I write to you today with a heavy heart. After much serious deliberation I have decided to cancel the 2006 Carrboro Poetry Festival.
The reason for the cancellation is that I had developed plans to restructure the organization needed to pull off the event but the plans collapsed. It has forced me to return to the drawing board without enough time to pull off the event for this year.
But, alas, never fear, my friends. The good news is that the festival will CERTAINLY be back in 2007. And doing so gives me the opportunity to reorganize the festival so that it may succeed for many years to come. I want it to last for decades, not years. In order to do so I must make some significant organizational changes. Holding the festival this year would only serve to undermine the event's longevity.
I wish to thank you for your support of the festival. We will see you in May 2007 but I promise you will hear from me sooner than that.
PS If anyone here knows an attorney who may be interested in doing some pro bono work helping me to set up a 501c3 for the festival, please email me backchannel. Thanks!
